Listen to January StandOuts Below
Friday, February 14, 2020
Guest Host: Richard Diaz!
I grew up in Joliet, IL (as in Joliet Jake of The Blues Brothers) and migrated to Chicago.
Fiction growing up? The Bible, Sunday comics, Verne, Poe, The Adventures of Tin Tin, …
Did time in the pastor’s office: something about questioning the teachings in bible school.
In middle school played hooky. Afternoon matinees. Learned the power of Story. Bonnie and Clyde: a fragile love story told in violent images and sounds.
Afterwards I drifted toward non-fiction:
HS science teacher
Science textbook asst. editor
Medical copy editor —AMA
Environmental health inspector and manager (tons of manuals, guidance docs, policies, procedures, etc).
Did a summer at Time in Manhattan on a paid fellowship, Mass Media Science Writing, sponsored by the AAAS.
Fun, but still no fiction until I ran into DimeStories.
I had held off some months on reading much like a baseball player scouting opposing pitchers. Better come with your A-game.
Wonderful venue.
