Costa Mesa, CA DimeStories
In April I was able to attend the open mic in Costa Mesa which takes place at LCA Wine. If you’re not familiar with LCA, check it out. It’s a lovely space with lots of great wine and a knowledgeable staff to help you navigate… and owner Nancy Milby has been most gracious in sharing her space with DimeStories.
Costa Mesa DimeStories take place the 2nd Sunday of each month at 5 pm…. except this May (Mother’s Day). Check out the latest stories from the OC on this very website, and get YOUR story ready for June.
San Diego, CA DimeStories
As you may or may not know the San Diego chapter leader, Joanna Gorman has stepped down. DimeStories executive director (that’s me) Jennifer Simpson was able to host in April, flying in for the event from Albuquerque… Now the chapter is putting together a committee to keep the chapter going. In addition to hosting duties at the regular open mic, there are needs for promotional assistance –getting the word out consistently to local arts calendars, sending out the monthly newsletter, listing events on FaceBook and MeetUP, and updating this website. Anyway, if you’re interested contact me through this website.
As of now (April 20, 2016) the SanDiego open mic series on a short break… stay tuned.

Select the proper piece of PROSE. It should be a story 500 words—or less. Really, you don’t have to use all three minutes. Nothing wrong with leaving your audience wanting more…. Edit with a razor. Look at every word. Does it belong? Does it contribute to the meaning? Is there a strong narrative voice? Vivid imagery? Practice reading your work out loud. Can you read it (without rushing) in three minutes? If not, go back and cut more words out.
Stand up straight. Seriously, this is important as it will allow you to breathe better utilizing your diaphragm to its fullest potential.
Breathe. Don’t forget to breath. Besides being really embarrassing to pass out from lack of oxygen, if you breathe throughout your piece, you’ll avoid those awkward gasps between paragraphs.
Know the microphone. Generally you’ll want to be about 6 to 12 inches away and slightly off to the side, but some microphones require you to be right up front and close. If there is no microphone, make sure you project your voice—this is where standing up straight and breathing will come in handy.
Speak slowly, clearly, and vary your tone and rhythm. This will create interest, and allow your audience time to process what you’re saying. Pause. Create a space for your listener to visualize.
Look up. Your audience wants to see more than the top of your head! Make eye contact. Smile….
Don’t be THAT reader, the one who reads and leaves, or the one who shows up only to promote their latest book. Instead, be a good community member, one who respects fellow DimeStoriers and listens to their stories. And even though as writers, we are mostly a bit socially awkward, take a chance– be the one who hangs around and welcomes new folks.

The DimeStories open mic series has been going strong since 2004 in San Diego, an additional chapter opened in Orange County a couple years later, and one in Albuquerque in 2010. DimeStories have been heard in New York, in L.A. at the LA Times Book Fair, and on the the radio.
DimeStories in print (selections from the DimeStories anthology celebrating our ten year anniversary) have been included in the Queensferry Press anthology, The Best Small Fictions 2015
This is a great community of writers, committed to sharing the best in short prose. It’s a supportive environment, worse that will happen is you’ll get applause 🙂
Bring your 3-minute story, and bring a friend (because listening is fun too!).
UPDATE: This happened! It was great!
Look for more workshops in the future!
I am so excited to offer this opportunity for the Albuquerque DimeStoriers– Amy Wallen (DimeStories Founder and all around amazing writer) will be in town to celebrate the Ten Year Annivesary of DimeStories, and emcee the October DimeStories Open Mic.
In addition, she has is offering this amazing workshop: Continue reading “Flash Workshop with Amy Wallen”
Thank you to everyone who submitted to the 10 Year Anniversary (print) Anthology project. We received some amazing stories… which are all now in the hands of our talented editorial board members for final decisions. If all goes well, we should have our selections made, and authors notified by the end of August.
Several of you have said (somewhat tongue in cheek) things like “I don’t know if I can wait that long!” and all I can say is that with an all-volunteer staff, we will do the best we can. AND if it makes you feel any better, I still have an application pending to work as a Teaching Assistant in the English Department at UNM…. I’m pretty sure I didn’t get the job, since I graduated with my MFA two years ago. ANYWAY… I won’t do that to you. I will let you know if your piece has been accepted, or if we have opted to pass… no matter how difficult it will be, and to those of you I know and love it will be difficult. Admittedly this is why I chose to gather a board, I would have published you all! (we would have ended up with a three volume set of DimeStories)
REMINDER: The Orange County Chapter is now gathering in Costa Mesa.
Sign-ups begin at 5:00 pm, and readings at 5:30 pm
